 RICHARD HALLIBURTON
Super Adventurer

Richard Halliburton a super adventurer traveld the world for some 15 to 20 years after graduating from Prinston University in the 1920's.

He was born in Tennessee to a wealthy family.  He gained quite some fame as a writer and lecturer on his early travels.

He wrote several books on his travels of which I have read as many as four or more.  My favorite is the subject of this post:

Flying Carpet Expedition.

I seriously recommend it to anyone reading this post that loves a great and true adventure story with many connections to real historical adventures and adventurers.

There is a good resume of his life on Wikipedia that may help inspire one to read my recommendation.

So, for all of that are all so enthusiastic about my Blog here is a little more to chew on and maybe think a little, I hope. :)

I do not know who the author of this little note is, it was added to a photograph I discovered on Pinterest.  However, I do agree with his comments and admire C. S. Lewis very much.

I was just finishing reading The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis this morning, when my Twitter feed lit up with the nation stumbling over itself to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of President John F. Kennedy.

Then, a lone tweet from @winstoncoolidge stood out in my timeline. “So today we hear about old people reminiscing about where they were when C.S. Lewis died.” Huh?! What? By Aslan’s mane, it’s the 50th anniversary of the death of C.S. Lewis, too! I literally discovered this with a C.S. Lewis book in my hand. (If that’s any indication of how much of a fan I am…)

Now I’m no soul-reader, but I think it’s fairly safe to say that the death of C.S. Lewis, just a few days shy of his 65th birthday, isn’t one to be too heavily mourned. I mean, I think we’re all fairly sure where he’s ended up.

A modern day literary saint meeting his maker isn’t something to mourn. It’s something to celebrate! So celebrate I shall.

C.S. Lewis is BY FAR one of my all time favorite authors.  An intellectual and an apologist, he used fairy tales, mythology, poetry, science fiction, children’s stories and scholarly essays to communicate the depths of truth. What’s not to love? He’s worth reading and rereading and then reading again.

So without further ado! Here are some literary morsels to chew on in celebration of the life of C.S. Lewis. (Oh, yeah, and sorry you died too JFK…)

1. I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.

2. Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.

3. A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.

4. There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, ‘All right, then, have it your way.’

5. Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.

6. Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.

7. We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.

8. The safest road to hell is the gradual one – the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.

9. The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts.

10. Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see.

11. Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.

KUKRI KNIFE

KUKRI KNIFE
I developed a 3D model of a Kukri knife yesterday and captured a PNG screenshot of it.  I set it with the black background and it seems to actually be there hanging in space, I love it!

ALAN WATTS

Well, something a little more intellectually interesting tonight.  Alan Watts.

Back in the mid-60s, I used to listen to FM Radio, in the evenings as it was the only entertainment I had at the time, we chose not to have a television.  One of my favorite radio stations was KFMB on which I believe Alan had a local Los Angeles radio broadcast.  I remember I really liked his personality and his philosophical discussion topics, Buddhism, general Philosophy, and Theology.  I was fairly young at the time, 23 through 25 or so.  At the beginning of my listening to his broadcasts, I was completely ignorant of the Eastern philosophies but I soon came to appreciate the thoughts and ideas within them.  I have mildly continued to enjoy reading and listening to some throughout the following years.  Even Kim's crush, Sam Harris.  Alan was born in England in 1915, came to the U.S. in the 1930s, lived primarily in the Bay area of S.F., died in 1973.

In my opinion, he was a great man.

Has anyone else had any experience with Alan?  If so, let us know what you thought of him.

Alright!

California Judge shoots down(no pun intended) the ban on assault rifles in California.

Sometimes things are not quite as bad as one thinks they are.

New Favorite Person

New Favorite Person, Jeffrey Mallinson.  I just added him to my list of favorites.  Professor of Philosophy at Concordia University Orange County CA.

I'm enrolled in a class he is teaching online, Christianity from a Classical & Philosophical           (Socratic) point of view.

Their online address is "1517 Academy".

Along this train of interest, I'm currently just finishing up the first season of a series titled, "The Chosen".  It is very interesting and different from the usual point of view as other religious productions use.

 Hello Everybody,

I'm contemplating getting myself an electric bicycle, fat tire, mountain type.  Anyone have any experience or knowledge about them?  They look like it might be fun to ride the dirt roads in the woods.

MOVIES & THEATERS

Well, NightOwl, it looks like you are right, I checked it out and Hollywood is opening up with a few productions.  I hope now that they will be able to compete with Television streaming venues.  At the worst, they may just have to join the streaming system.  It may be that the theaters will be the only victims.

OK, I'm back for another try.

I was in a bad mood and should have just not posted for a short period of time, but I must have just wanted to express my frustration.

My main activity recently has been developing CAD drawings of various subjects with frustrating results, I cannot stay interested in a subject all the way to completion, restless mind syndrome I guess.

I have been watching and listening to some video series' that are very interesting to me: The Chosen video and Jung on Audible.  Both are very interesting but somewhat separated themes.

I have a new subject of interest I have been thinking about lately; Movie Theaters.  Due to the shutdowns resulting from the Covid 19 restrictions, and the advancements of television broadcasting, video streaming, in particular, it seems probable to me that the motion picture theaters may not reopen.  Does anyone else share my opinion?

Another item of interest to me: Electric, Fat Tired, Bicycle. Anyone out there know anything about them?

One more subject to try to get some dialog going here.  Contemporary intellectuals:  if you have a favorite let us know who it is and some background information on them.  I will post mine tomorrow.
