She was the epitome of the great age of sail, in the 19th Century. Along with her archrival, Thermopylae, they plied the oceans to bring tea from China to Great Britain.

Cuty Sark’s fasted run from China to Great Britain was 90 days for the 15,000 miles. That run calculates to 7.0 mph, average speed. These Clipper Ships often had 1000 mi runs at 11.5 mph.

As a reference, the modern speed record for a long distance sailing ship is: 20.6 mph!

Cutty Sark was under restoration at the time of the fire. Preliminary estimates of the fire damage indicate that she was not damaged so severely that the restoration cannot continue.

Good luck gallant lady, here’s hoping that you survive yet another century.
